Bakers Cottage is a project in rural Victoria, near Melbourne. The project calls for the renovation and extension of an old machinery shed/stables which had previously been converted into a residential house.
The form of the existing bluestone building is replicated by a new, lightweight accommodation wing to house a growing family. The new structure has been designed to follow the form of the old building but stand apart significantly, with a soft timber facade, dark finishes and concrete upstand at the base of the external wall providing fire and flood protection.
The new structure is separated from the old with a glass and steel walkway. Behind the walkway is an enclosed courtyard, protected from the wind, sun and rain and a providing a safe space for young children to play.
